Oct 07 (Field Level Media) – In a depth trade, the Pittsburgh Penguins sent forward Filip Hallander to the Edmonton Oilers for defenseman Spencer Stastney on Wednesday.
Pittsburgh general manager Kyle Dubas has traded Hallander twice and acquired him once. As general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2020, he acquired Hallander in a trade that sent Kasperi Kapanen to Pittsburgh.
Dubas then dealt Hallander back to Pittsburgh to acquire Jared McCann, who was subsequently selected by Seattle in the 2021 expansion draft. Now, Dubas has shipped Hallander north of the border.
Hallander, 26, had an outstanding opening night, scoring a goal and adding two assists in Pittsburgh’s 7-0 win at Philadelphia. He played 9:39 on Oct. 3 against Montreal and was a healthy scratch Monday against Winnipeg.
In parts of four seasons with the Penguins, Hallander has played 18 games, recording two goals and five assists while posting a plus-8 rating.
Stastney was a healthy scratch for Edmonton’s first three games. The 26-year- old native of Woodridge, Ill., split time between Edmonton and Nashville last season, appearing in 66 totl games, after playing 51 games for the Predators from 2022-25.
He has four goals, 15 assists and 30 penalty minutes in 117 career games.
Stastney is not expected to crack the Penguins’ top six defensemen but adds NHL-caliber depth to the group.
