DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (MPUC) has approved an approximate nine percent rate increase for customers of Minnesota Power.
For residential customers, their monthly bill would increase by about 2 percent since an interim increase of seven percent is already in effect.
Business and industrial customers were paying an interim rate of 14 percent and will see a refund to reflect the final rate.
The new rate is expected to go into effect this summer.
The approved rate is much less than the 18 percent request that was made by power company in 2021.
In a news release, Minnesota Power says monthly bills for residential customers are below the national average while receiving the highest percentage of renewable energy in the state.
Allete President and CEO Bethany Owen says the MPUC decision does not give them the tools and resources necessary to continue their clean energy transformation and expects rate review requests to become more frequent going forward.
