DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – Saturday marks the 55th anniversary of a tragic event that claimed four lives at the Duluth Ship Canal during a storm in 1967.
Three teens were swept into the water and drowned along with a Coast Guardsman who attempted to save them.
The victims that day were 17 year old Eric Halverson, twin 16 year old brothers Arthur and Nathan Halverson and 31 year old USCG Boatswain’s Mate 1st Class Edgar Culbertson.
An annual remembrance is held each April 30th as four roses are placed at the plaque near the canal that commemorates the loss.
The organizer of that yearly memorial, Captain Tom Mackay, passed away in November and family and friends have vowed to carry on his efforts.
The public is invited to join them at noon Saturday near the Lake Superior Maritime Visitors Center in Canal Park for this year’s ceremony.
