DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – Through the end of April the Port of Duluth-Superior handled nearly 4.2 short tons of cargo, 48 percent higher than a year ago and 23 percent ahead of the five season average.
Outbound tonnage nearly doubled last year’s pace with coal and iron shipments leading the way.
Duluth Seaway Port Authority Director Deb DeLuca says it has been a great start for what is expected to be a bounce-back season after the COVID-19 induced lows of 2020.
Besides the increase in tonnage, the ship count through the Twin Ports is also up dramatically so far this spring.
Overall, ports on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway have seen a 3.7 percent increase in shipments from the same period last year.
