DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – A 940 million dollar project by Minnesota Power to replace infrastructure and improve the reliability of an electric transmission line from North Dakota to Hermantown has been approved by the Public Utilities Commission.
The project includes replacement of buildings at the Arrowhead Substation in Hermantown using new state-of-the-art technology.
The 465 mile high voltage line was first commissioned in 1977 and acquired by Minnesota Power in 2009. It delivers over 500 megawatts of energy from North Dakota wind sites to power customers in Minnesota.
The project will also create bi-directional line capability to allow energy to flow in either direction when needed.
Construction could begin later this year with the upgrades in service expected between 2028 and 2030.
