DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – Minnesota Power has submitted a Certificate of Need with the Public Service Commission to upgrade its high voltage direct current transmission system.
The system delivers renewable wind energy from North Dakota to customers in Minnesota.
The project would replace aging converter facilities at the Arrowhead substation in Hermantown with a new building and electrical infrastructure.
It would also see construction of three transmission lines to connect the new converter station to the existing electric system.
Similar upgrades would be done at the substation in Center, North Dakota.
Pending necessary approvals, construction could begin next year with completion between 2028 and 2030.
Minnesota Power is seeking federal and state funding to mitigate rate impacts on customers for the 800 to 900 million dollar project.
