INTERNATIONAL FALLS, MN (KDAL) – The staff at Voyageurs National Park will conduct prescribed burns to treat areas of invasive hybrid cattails in park wetlands.
If conditions allow, the initial burns will begin on selected wetlands near Rainy Lake this week.
Other wetlands in the park will be targeted throughout the winter.
Burning operations will only be conducted during daylight hours and visitors may encounter smoke and should avoid areas where active burning is underway.
Hybrid cattails have invaded about 500 acres of wetlands in the Voyageurs, displacing native plants.
Removing the cattails will provide enhanced fishing opportunities and restore the wetlands to a more diverse and natural state.
