DULUTH, MN (KDAL) - Duluth fire crews spent over 3 hours battling a blaze at 1317 E. 2nd Street early Tuesday morning. The occupants of the 5 unit, 3 story apartment building were evacuated safely but a cat perished in the fire. The fire heavily damaged the front porch of the structure, a second floor apartment and a portion of the 3rd floor attic space. There was significant smoke damage to the entire 2nd and 3rd floors and water damage occurred throughout the building. The first call came in at 12:27 a-m and a second alarm was called for the fast spreading fire. 27 firefighters from three fire stations battled the fire. The initial damage estimate was set at 100 thousand dollars. The Northland Chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting several of the occupants. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Duluth Fire Marshal's office.
