Former Brewer, Tony Gwynn Jr. receives standing ovation

(WNFL)- Former Brewers' outfielder Tony Gwynn Jr. was given a standing ovation last night, in his first Major League at-bat since his Hall-of-Fame father died nine days ago. Gwynn came to the plate as a pinch-hitter for Philadelphia in the eighth inning of a 7-4 home win over Miami. Once the normally-tough Philly crowd rose to its feet, Marlins' catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia paid a visit to the mound -- which extended the fans' tribute. After the game, Gwynn broke down while talking about his father, and the support he was given by the Philadelphia fans. Tony Gwynn Sr. won eight National League batting titles and played in two World Series during his 20-year career with San Diego. He died from cancer June 16th at age 54. The younger Gwynn came up in the Brewers' organization, and played three seasons for the Crew from 2006-08.
