PORT HURON, MI (KDAL) - The U-S Coast Guard Cutter Hollyhock was involved in a collision with the ore carrier Mesabi Miner in northern Lake Michigan on Sunday. The cutter was breaking ice ahead of the 990 foot motor vessel when the collision occurred. The cutter sustained damage to the stern and fantail and the Mesabi Miner reported a crack in the bow about four feet above the waterline. Both vessels were able to continue and neither reported any flooding. The Mesabi Miner will unload its cargo in Gary, Indiana where damage and planned repairs will be assessed. The Hollyhock arrived in St. Ignace, Michigan and is now undergoing a damage assessment.
