WMU Football drops opener at Purdue

The Western Michigan University football team (0-1, 0-0 MAC) were led by a spectacular collegiate debut from Jarvion Franklin, but the Purdue Boilermakers (1-0, 0-0 B1G) were too much to handle as they defeated the Broncos, 43-34 on Saturday at Ross-Ade Stadium in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Franklin paced a much-improved Bronco offense that scored five touchdowns on the afternoon. Coming off a season in which WMU scored 23 touchdowns all season, it was a clear step in the right direction for the brown and gold.

In his first game as a Bronco, Franklin led the way with 19 carries for 163 yards and three rushing scores.

Zach Terrell was 18/36 for WMU with two touchdown passes, but threw a crucial interception in the second quarter that led to a Purdue touchdown, giving the Boilermakers a 23-14 lead at the half.

Each team put up 20 points in the second half, and Purdue was able to hold on and match their win total from all of last season (1-11) with the week one victory.

The Broncos will have a bye week and return to the gridiron on Saturday, September 13th, as they take to the road and face the Idaho Vandals at the Kibbie Dome in Moscow, Idaho.

Coverage will begin at 4 pm on the Bronco Radio Network.
