UNDATED (WHTC) -- Justin Verlander provided both pitching and offense as the Tigers beat the Padres 6-2 at Petco Park. Verlander tossed seven innings of two-run ball, scattering eight hits and racking up eight strikeouts to earn his first win of the season. He also picked up his first and second career hits in the contest. Torii Hunter and Austin Jackson drove in two each while Ian Kinsler had two doubles in the victory. Max Scherzer and the Tigers take on San Diego this afternoon on 1450 WHTC at 3:45 P.M.
The Cubs fell to St. Louis on Saturday, 10-4. Carlos Villanueva went three-plus frames but gave up nine runs in the loss. The Cubs face the Cardinals at Busch Stadium this afternoon.
The White Sox were beaten by Cleveland on Saturday, 12-6. Adam Eaton scored twice and hit a solo homer for Chicago. Adam Dunn drove in two runs in the loss. Ronald Belisario took the loss out of the bullpen. The White Sox and Indians play again this afternoon at U.S. Cellular Field.
The West Michigan Whitecaps had no problem making the quick turnaround after a 14-inning win on Friday, overcoming a 71-minute rain delay on Saturday afternoon to establish season-highs for both runs and hits in a game during an 8-1 win over the Beloit Snappers at Fifth Third Ballpark. The Whitecaps will try to get another game in against Beloit this afternoon.
The Red Wings play the final game of the regular season this afternoon against the St.Louis Blues. The Stanly Cup playoffs begin later this week and for the 23rd season in a row, the Red Wings will be taking part. For the first time in 57 years the Red Wings and Boston Bruins will face-off in a Stanley Cup playoff series. Exact dates and times for each game are expected on Monday.
In a high-scoring game, the Blackhawks lost to the Predators on Saturday, 7-5. The Hawks are headed to the playoffs but won’t know who they’ll play until later on today.
The AHL season finishes up at the end of this week and it looks like last year’s Calder Cup champions, the Grand Rapids Griffins will again be headed to the playoffs. They still have a few more games to play, one of which takes place this afternoon against the Charlotte Checkers.
The Pistons take on the Toronto Raptors at the Palace of Auburn Hills this afternoon. Detroit closes out the regular season Wednesday night against the Oklahoma City Thunder at Chesapeake Energy Arena.
The red- hot Chicago Bulls take on the New York Knicks this evening at Madison Square Garden. The Bulls haven’t lost since a home setback against the Portland Trail Blazers on March 28. The NBA regular season ends on Wednesday, April 16.
