Duluth, MN (KDAL) - Southbound I-35 is closed in Duluth between 5th Avenue West and 21st Avenue West. Duane Hill of the Minnesota Department of Transportation says the decision to close the stretch was made after inspectors on Friday discovered deteriorating bridge pilings under one of the 13-hundred piers along the stretch. He notes that the pier in question hadn’t failed and the closure is precautionary. Because of the hard-to-get-at location of the corroded pilings, it will take crews some time to make a temporary fix—which will allow workers to make a longer term repair. That said, Hill is hopeful that the project will take no longer than a week. He doesn’t know yet how much it will cost. Crews worked Monday evening to post the detour and close off the section.
If your morning commute takes you along I-35 from London Road south, the posted detour will take you along London Road to 12th Avenue East, up to 3rd Street to Mesaba Avenue, and along Michigan Street to 21st Avenue West. The on-ramps to I-35 south are closed at Lake Avenue, 5th Avenue West and Mesaba.
Local traffic may use I-35 between 26th Avenue East and Lake Avenue. All southbound traffic must exit at the common exit to Lake Avenue and 5th Avenue West.
Also… A posted detour for eastbound Mesaba Avenue is in affect and follows Michigan Street, 21st Avenue West to southbound I-35.
