DULUTH, MN (KDAL) - The proposed Northern Lights Express high-speed commuter rail line has cleared another hurdle, and the public is invited to weigh-in. Officials will be on hand to talk about the project's environmental assessment, which will be released on Monday. The open house question-and-answer session is slated for Thursday, Apr. 4 at the Cambridge Armed Forces Reserve Community Center in Cambridge. The Minnesota Department of Transportation, the Federal Railroad Administration, the Minneapolis-Duluth/Superior Passenger Rail Alliance and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation collaborated on the assessment, which comes a few months late but under budget.  The project, which would use existing railways, involves the construction of necessary infrastructure for the 155-mile, high-speed intercity passenger rail service between Duluth and Minneapolis. The environmental assessment highlights the purpose and need of the project, along with its social, economic and environmental impacts. The project got a step closer to reality last week, as well, when MNDOT added a link to it from its homepage. The open house is from 6 to 8 p.m.
