WASHINGTON, D.C. (KDAL) - Minnesota Senator Al Franken has sponsored legislation that would help volunteer fire departments to recruit firefighters by restoring and expanding tax incentives. The "Volunteer Responder Incentive Protection Reauthorization Act" would exempt any property tax benefit and other benefits up to 600 dollars from being taxed as income. Congress had passed similar legislation in 2007 but it expired in 2010. Senator Franken says the legislation would thank current volunteer firefighters and inspire others to take on the very important job of making communities safer.
