UNDATED (KDAL) - At a news conference Thursday, the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa detailed more information regarding their hunt for the barrels dumped into Lake Superior at the height of the cold war. The efforts recovered 25 barrels but the 22 of them that contained explosive trigger devices for cluster bombs were returned to the bottom. Federal regulations prohibited bringing those barrels to shore so the location was marked and they were dumped back in the lake. No hazardous materials were found in the other barrels. If proper permits are obtained, the band could return to the site and bring the other barrels to shore at some point in the future.
