Duluth, MN (KDAL) - The D-N-R wants more information before Gogebic Taconite can proceed with mining for iron ore in northern Wisconsin. Gogebic Taconite submitted a Bulk Sample Plan, to take test samples for mineral quality testing. The Department of Natural Resources wants more details and additional protection measures before making a decision. DNR Hydrogeologist Lawrence Lynch sent a letter requesting details about stormwater management, blasting activities, and how to prevent erosion of stockpiled topsoil. The DNR is also interested how the mining company would manage drilling water, drill cuttings, and dust. They also question the amount of time needed to take bulk samples, and how long before sites are restored and able to grow new vegetation. Gogebic Taconite must now gather and submit the requested information to the DNR before being considered for approval.
