The beloved host of travel show California's Gold died at his home in Los Angeles on Sunday (06Jan13).

Howser also appeared as himself on The Simpsons.

His travel show ran for 18 seasons before Howser retired in November (12).

Howser became a California TV staple in the early 1980s, travelling the state with a camera crew and documenting festivals and off-the-beaten-track towns. His show was not limited to the state and became a beloved show for all Americans with dreams of heading west.

He also fronted travel shows Visiting with Huell Howser, Road Trip with Huell Howser and California's Golden Parks.

He started his career in his native Tennessee and also worked in New York City as host of a popular magazine-style series.
