The Taps Are Flowing Again Following 3 Water Main Breaks

Duluth, MN (KDAL) - Following up on a story we brought you Thursday…

Residents in three Duluth neighborhoods were without water for a majority of Thursday.  Public works crews discovered three water main breaks in Woodland, Harbor Heights—along Central Entrance—and Rice’s Point.  The city’s Howard Jacobson says crews had all three fixed by around 6:30 to 7:00 that evening.  However, to make the repairs, workers were forced to shut off the water service for as long as eight hours.  Jacobson tells K-D-A-L News barometric pressure changes and frost usually are the culprits behind main breaks, as was the case with the 12 inch and two eight inch mains this time around.  That said, the thick blanket of snow has actually been a blessing for the public works department because it prevents frost from settling deep into the ground.  Last year there were around 200 main breaks.  So far this year, that figure is lower.
