VIDEO: O'Brien draws cheers from crowd over environmental issue in 6th District debate

by

BUCHANAN (WKZO) -- In a "no audience participation" style debate, candidate Mike O'Brien provoked hearty applause from the crowd after responding to a question on energy policy in the final 6th District Congressional Debate.

The question asked by The League of Women Voters moderator Susan Smith was, “What direction do you think America’s energy plan should take?” O’Brien answered first saying he believes, “in a true all of the above energy policy”. He went on to point out Congressman Upton’s shortcomings in what he calls “small ideas” for solving the energy crisis. Upton rebutted by saying that he too supports an “all of the above” energy policy and emphasized the importance of expanding drilling for oil on American soil. Upton stated that under the Obama administration drilling on public lands has declined. Upton went on to say that no candidate supporting an “all of the above” energy policy can be against drilling on public land or against fracking which, one study has shown, would support 1.7 million jobs.

The rebuttal by candidate O’Brien following Upton’s statements set the democratic leaning crowd into an ovation that lead to a warning from the moderator. O’Brien pointed out the high-risk environmental factors involved in fracking asserting to Upton that he could not talk about fracking as an energy solution until the chemicals used in the process are explained and the Halliburton “loophole” is closed.  Watch above for the video.

The debate was hosted at the D.C. Cook Nuclear Power Plant in Buchanan, MI and lasted for an hour Tuesday night bringing in a capacity crowd.
