Duluth, MN (KDAL) - Way up north in Lake of the Woods County, along the Canadian Boarder is a State of Minnesota Park called Zippel Bay State Park. Not very well known, it was opened in the late 1950's to provide access to Lake of the Woods on the American side of the boarder.
The park has a problem, huge pine trees that are dying due to their size. The D-N-R fears that the big trees could become a fire hazard so with the park closed they are logging them off. Once that is done, the area will be given a controled burn and new seedlings will be planted in the spring.
Zipple Bay State park is named after an early settler who built a cabin and started a small fishing village in 1887.
