USA Network Axes 'Political Animals'

By Christian Blauvelt, Hollywood.com Staff

USA Network vetoed a second season of the critically acclaimed but ratings challenged Political Animals this morning. Originally billed as ""a limited series event,"" the D.C.-set show was created by Brothers & Sisters' Greg Berlanti and starred Sigourney Weaver in her first major series-regular role as the head of a powerful Washington family with political inclinations.

The impressive cast was rounded out by Carla Gugino, Ciarán Hinds, Ellen Burstyn, Adrian Pasdar, and Roger Bart (currently doing double duty as poisonous gossip columnist Masen Treadwell on Revenge). Though essentially a miniseries, it was hoped that the acting and writing clout Political Animals lent USA could earn it a second season. But an average viewership of 3.2 million just wasn't enough. The move follows recent news that USA has also cancelled Fairly Legal and Common Law

In response to the decision Berlanti took to Twitter and said, ""Thanks everyone for the nice tweets regarding Political Animals. It remains one of the best and most rewarding experiences of my life..."" He went on to say, ""The cast, the crew, writers, studio and USA were all a dream to work with. We all got to make what we set out to. Couldn't be more proud!""
