Madison, WI (KDAL) - The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources yesterday closed Wolf Harvest Zone 1 to hunters and trappers, making it the third zone to close in the state's inaugural wolf season. Zones five and six are expected to close in the near future, and Wisconsin hunters and trappers are encouraged to check for updates prior to hunting.
As the WDNR closes zones, it is studying trends in an effort to eventually draft permanent rules that will help drive the wolf population down toward goal levels. Officials say they aim to reduce the wolf population by 116 throughout Wisconsin's hunting and trapping zones. Zone one's quota of 32 wolves was met Saturday. Hunters and trappers can go to the WDNR's website for updated closure information.
