The rescue of the Chilean miners, trapped for 69 days underground, is underway with the first of the 33 reaching the surface earlier today.

With politicians, family members and nervous strangers watching, 31-year-old Florencio Avalos emerged after a bumpy 20-minute ride to the surface to applause, cheers and chants. He was wearing green coveralls and sunglasses as he hugged his family.
