Once a week, I review a movie that I had previously not viewed. It could be a new one or an old one. It does not matter. What does matter is that you read and enjoy this simple blog post from a movie geek.
The movie that I watched over the weekend was Say Anything, a late 80’s romantic comedy featuring John Cusack as Lloyd Dobler and Ione Skye as Diane Court. Full disclosure, the only reason I watched this movie is for the scene Dobler holds up the boom box outside of Court’s house.
I have seen that scene played over a hundred times and after watching the movie I understand why that scene is the only scene you see from that movie. Say Anything doesn’t set itself apart from 80’s romantic comedies in anyway. It was not a trend setter by any means.
The premise of the movie is Dobler is a free-spirited kid who wants to take the valedictorian, Court, out on a date. They try hard not to fall for each other but become inseparable during the summer. The only problem is that Court is to leave for Europe at the end of the summer.
Court breaks up with him to avoid each other falling in love but it is too late. He cries. She cries. It is all very sad. Raise your hands if you have seen this scenario played out before? The story was boring as was the acting of Skye. I didn’t really buy that she was all that much smarter than Dobler.
Maybe I have a black heart but I didn’t feel for either character. I just felt that movie missed that moment, outside of the stereo scene, that grabbed you. I do know that the dad from Frasier, John Mahoney, plays the dad in this movie. That was about all I got from it.
Sorry 1980’s but so far, I think I have seen just about enough of your romantic comedies. Please talk to me when you have some worth my time to watch.
